I have been a fan of tennis for many years and I enjoy Women’s Tennis in particular.
Recently at a tournament in China, rising star Alexandra Eala of the Philippines was playing a match against the Swiss Victoria Golubic and Eala had won three games in a row and was on her way to winning the match. Golubic called for a medical time-out and was treated for 9 minutes rather than 90 seconds that the rules call for.
This greatly effected Alexandra’s play (she is 19 years old) and her concentration had gone and she lost he match 7-0 in the final tiebreak. Watching the match it was clear from her body language that Alexandra had been the victim of un-sportsmanship behaviour on the part of Golubic who had done this before in other matches – calling a time-out at a crucial stage of a match.
I hope the WTA will look at this sort of behaviour and outlaw medical time-outs in the final sets of matches. If you need a medical time-out in a final set and cannot play on you should forfeit the match.
I write this a huge fan of Alexandra’s admittedly but I find Golubic’s behaviour un-sportsman like and I hope she is fined and prevented from doing this this again.
