In my life, I have been a Microsoft Certified Solution Developer and more recently an expert in the Apple environment.
That is to say that I am not exactly stupid in Information Technology.
Sometime ago I decided that I wanted a Network Attached System (NAS). After researching what was available I decided on and purchased a UGREEN DXP2800 which was a two bay NAS with superior hardware than the competition.
What I mean about superior hardware was it has 8GB RAM as opposed to the competition, it was metal and nost plastic and the processor was a lot stronger that others.
NAS systems run on Linux so I had to learn something about Linux and to this day I am still learning.
My NAS has two 12TB Hard Drives protected by RAID 0 which is to say that everything is saved to both disks so that if one disk fails, you do not lose everything.
I back up my Mac using Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner.
Recently, I have installed Nextcloud which is an open-source platform that does not require monthly fees for Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive or Dropbox. It is free to use if you are not a business.
Nextcloud is your own server controlled by yourself.
Nextcloud can handle my email, my contacts, my calendar, my word processing. Also Notes and other software – all free.
Setting up Nextcloud can be difficult and there is a learning curve.
It does involve knowing how to use Terminal on a Mac or a Windows PC or a Linux machine.
In order to backup my Mac and NAS, I shall use Idrive – an online service that permits you to back your various devices.
