Your computer must have an Operating System (OS) to work. It is software that enables us to use everything on a computer – software, the Internet, printing – everything.
So when the OS is updated it is usually a good idea to install it as it will have new abilities and improved security.
With Apple, new versions are free to install on computers that can accept the new OS – usually 7 year old machines at the most.
With Linux, updates are free.
Microsoft though charges users to update for its new OS and almost insists that you have a new computer. I say almost because going from Windows 10 to 11 required TPM (Trusted Platform Module) which older machines would not have. Coupled with the cost of Windows 11, many people and businesses have refused to make the upgrade.
Many people are moving to Mac or Linux as a result.
In addition, Microsoft insists you do things that you may not want to but with constant reminders coming up, they wear some down.
If you already have a monitor and a mouse the Mac Mini is a brilliant introduction to the Apple ecosystem at a starting price of £599.
